Your constitution is all sail and no anchor
Tieresias had nothing on Macaulay. Macaulay may have written before Marxism became such a threat, but in his day they had levelers, luddites, socialists and communists of all stripes, many of these douchenozzles native to the American land, and he certainly recognized what could happen. Of course he utterly failed to see that Britain would fall to the barbarians well before the US.
Your constitution is all sail and no anchor. As I said before, when a society has entered on this downward progress, either civilisation or liberty must perish. Either some Caesar or Napoleon will seize the reins of government with a strong hand; or your republic will be as fearfully plundered and laid waste by barbarians in the twentieth Century as the Roman Empire was in the fifth;—with this difference, that the Huns and Vandals who ravaged the Roman Empire came from without, and that your Huns and Vandals will have been engendered within your own country by your own institutions.Macaulay would have definitely called Democrats and other socialists a bunch of progressive douchebags.
